The thyroid is a small gland which is located in the front of the neck. It has two wide wings which are around the throat; it has a similar shape to a butterfly. The thyroid is responsible for creating hormones in the human body that play an important role in many different activities in your body, such as the speed of heartbeat and calories burned.
Disturbance in the thyroid’s work can cause many problems because, at that time, it creates a too high or too small amount of hormones. This disturbance is called thyroid disease, and it has different types, such as hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
The symptoms of thyroid is depending on the severity of the hormone deficiency in female body. More women experience thyroid diseases than men, mainly after menopause (a condition in which women do not get menstruation). There are not many noticeable symptoms in the early stage of thyroid diseases, but they can cause several health issues over time.
This article will discuss all the symptoms a female may experience during thyroid diseases.
Common Symptoms of Thyroid Disease in Women
If a female has a thyroid disease, she can experience several symptoms. However, it is hard to detect if you have thyroid disease because symptoms are very common and similar to other medical conditions and ageing effects.
- Unexpected Weight Gain or Loss – In hypothyroidism, your metabolism slows down, which can be due to the low levels of thyroid hormones. As a result, women may gain weight. As opposed, hyperthyroidism is a condition in which thyroid hormones are overproduced, which can speed up a lot of functions in women’s bodies, and they may lose weight unexpectedly. The weight gain and loss are huge, as we are talking about up to 10 kgs in just 2-3 months.
- Menstruation Problems – Women, who are suffering from thyroid diseases, may experience irregularity in their periods. Disorders of hormones can cause early or late menstruation. In hypothyroidism, a female can get heavier menstrual periods, and in contrast, in hyperthyroidism, they can experience lighter menstrual periods. In some cases, women also face problems in getting pregnant with thyroid diseases.
- Hair Fall– Hair fall is the most common symptom of thyroid disease; females can experience unexpected hair loss during hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. This is because their hair gets dried out. After all, it cannot get enough moisturizer, which leads to hair fall. This can be cured if the disease is treated well in many cases.
- Constant Feeling Extremely Hot or Cold – Due to hormone disorders, females can experience extreme temperature sensitivity, as this disease disrupts their ability to regulate body temperature. And as a result, they feel hotter than others because of the overproduction of hormones during hyperthyroidism. Even if there is a cooler environment, it causes excessive sweating and sensitivity to a little heat. On the other side, in hypothyroidism, a female feels unusual cold when it’s warmer outside.
- Muscle Pain and Tiredness – You can feel joint pains and weakness during thyroid disease. This can happen due to intense muscular fatigue, and you can feel high tiredness.
